There are indeed lots of traps in the spiritual community and I faced the same struggle for quite some time. This is one of the main reasons that kept me from joining many spiritual communities. However, there are many genuinely good, awakened and free souls around and it's usually easy to feel that intuitively. Some people are lost in the traps but that's okay.
